New online palaeography courses by Caroline Adams

Caroline Adams, Archivist and historian in West Sussex (her website is Key to the past), has launched two new courses, starting in the next two weeks.

Manorial Records
This course is now six weeks long, and is a mixture of palaeography skills and learning about manors and the records they created.
This will be on Thursday evenings, 8-9 pm, starting 25 February
The cost is £45 for five weeks.
This course requires some knowledge of palaeography.

Starters’ course
For people new to palaeography or those who need some revision, including tips and tricks for making a success of reading old handwriting.
There is a choice of three times:
Tuesday evenings, 8-9 pm starting 2 March
Wednesday mornings, 10-11 am starting 3 March
Wednesday evenings, 8-9 pm, starting 3 March
This course runs for five weeks and cost £30.
Once you are booked on one course you can switch to one of the others if it is more convenient that week – they are the same. Teaching is by a mixture of WhatsApp messaging (so you will need access to a smart phone to start it) and emails.
The documents vary considerably, so you do pick up extra information on types and forms of documents.  They are mostly from 16th-18th centuries, but learning the letter forms and abbreviations will put you in good stead for reading later hands. Other than ‘signing in’ each week, you do not have to join in if you would prefer to watch others.
